Fractal, MetaTools Promise Smooth Merger
September 10th, 2007
Two of the most innovative graphics software makers may be merging, but the companies in question are asking users to remain calm. Both Fractal and MetaTools, who have agreed to merge into a single, as yet unnamed company, promise that their upcoming merger will not impact product selection and support.
MetaTools makes the popular Kai’s Power Tools line as well as several other professional and consumer graphics programs. Fractal is best known for its innovative 2-D, 3-D and VRML tools, such as Painter and Detailer.
A comprehensive question-and-answer page posted on each company’s Web site promises continuation of products for both consumers and graphics professionals.
We will continue to serve both the professional and the consumer markets, leveraging MetaTools’ depth and breadth of retail relationships to sell more products to a broader range of customers, read the statement.
Mergers and acquisitions can wreak havoc on a company’s product line, often disrupting upgrade schedules or killing products altogether, but Fractal and MetaTools are trying hard to assure customers.
Our product lines are extremely complementary and we look forward to jointly integrating our technologies for even more compelling future products, said Fractal CEO Mark Zimmer in the online statement.
In addition, MetaTools recently acquired Real Time Geometry, a 3-D research lab based in Princeton, New Jersey. Key future innovations expected from the lab will be included in future products from the combined companies.
John Wilczak, MetaTools’ current chief executive officer, will be CEO of the firm created by the merger. Zimmer will become the company’s chief technical officer reporting to Wilczak. Tom Hedges, Fractal Design’s chairman, will become the company’s chief systems architect.
