Toshiba Develops Agent-based System for Databases
July 5th, 2007
Toshiba’s research and development center is developing an agent-based database management system that gives you a peek at what the intranet of the near future may look like.
The Toshiba software, announced this week, is designed to help employees easily share and find knowledge that would otherwise be locked up in large databases. The system, now being tested by 300 Toshiba employees, uses a natural language interface.
For example, you can pose such questions as Please tell me who is familiar with edutainment software. The system can also interpret voice input and gestures, the company said.
Toshiba expects to market the system within two years. The company foresees the system to be used in corporate intranets, where huge volumes of data makes finding and sharing information difficult, the company said.
One of the system’s strengths is that it does not rely on keyword searches, which become inefficient as the volume of stored information increases.
